  • A new book, On Their Own (Westview Press), by Martha Shirk and Gary Stangler, tells the heart-wrenching, but also inspiring stories of ten young people making the transition from foster care to adulthood. • Melanie Green and Brandon Burt, youth coordinators for the Clark County Partnerships for Youth Transition program and the National Center on Youth Transition (NCYT), have been named to the advisory board of the University of South Florida’s Research and Training Center for Children's Mental Health. They are the first young adults appointed to the RTC board in its 20-year history.

The organization is one of two federally-funded research and training centers in children's mental health. The other is the Regional Research Institute at Portland State University.

Located at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida, the research and training center seeks to promote the development of effective systems of care for children with serious emotional disturbances and their families.

The board of advisors is composed of national leaders from the research, family, policy, administrative, and practice fields.

Recommended because of their familiarity with the mental health system and their proven leadership qualities, their experience working with older adolescents and young adults offers perspective to the field.

About 25 people serve on the advisory board. Melanie and Brandon will attend an annual meeting in Tampa, Fla., and will correspond with the center throughout the year offering advice on specific issues related to the center’s research.
